What is the name of contagious skin diseases that eat away at the flesh that have been around for many years?

There is a certain one my Mom %26amp; I are trying to think of %26amp; just can not think of what it is called. Years %26amp; years ago they had shipped the people to an island that had this disease. Hope that someone can help me find out what it was called. What is the name of contagious skin diseases that eat away at the flesh that have been around for many years?

You're probably thinking of leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease. It causes deformities over time. It is contagious, but it happens to be the least contagioius of all contagious diseases; it is very difficult to catch (many people have worked with lepers daily for years without catching the disease). It was feared because of the deformities it could produce.

Historically, lepers (people who have the disease) have been isolated from the rest of society. Today they are more likely to simply be treated instead of being exiled.
Your description sounds like Leprosy (Hansen's Disease is what they call it now...), and they shipped people to Molokai, Hawaii to live there. But there is also Impetigo, which is more contagious, but I don't think they ever shipped anyone away for that.
Leprosy- There was also a hospital in Carville,Louisiana that closed in 1998 for people with leprosy. A strange thing is that 1 in 6 armadillos in the coastal areas of texas and Louisiana harbor the disease and can pass it to people.Yuck

THe name of contagious skin diseases is LEPROSY, is the contaminated diseases to other persons. So that the patient will be separated to uncontaminated persons.
Necrotizing fasciitis

Hansens disease (leprosy) doesn't necessarily eat the flesh but causes skin lesions. It will not cause your limbs to fall off, instead it will cause disfigurement or amputation will be needed.
- leprosy?

- necrotizing fasciitis? (flesh eating disease)

- gangrene?

- scurvy (though the skin part is a small piece of it)?
